Theodore Racing, team from Hong Kong founded by real estate magnate and millionaire Teddy Yip, was involved in international motor racing from early 1970s, and moved to F1 as private entrant in 1977. At the beginning of 1980 Yip bought the Shadow team and then based on Shadow remnants he, with Sid Taylor and Julian Randles, established his own F1 manufacturing facility. Yip recruited Tony Southgate as head designer and Joe Ramirez as team manager. The car christened TY01 (after Teddy Yip initials) debuted with sensational 6th place by Patrick Tambay at US Grand Prix West. Tambay moved to Ligier in mid-season, and 1979 F2 champion Marc Surer took the seat in TY01. In Zandvoord the Swiss driver have finished on 8th position, which marked his best result of the season.
