1992 Andrea Moda S291 McCarthy

Andrea Moda Formula team was founded by Italian shoe designer Adrea Sassetti, the owner of Andrea Moda fashion brand. In September 1991 Sassetti bought out the  Coloni F1 team, hired a number of ex-Coloni staff and purchased the F1 car design from Nick Wirth’s Simtek Research, who had originally designed the machine in 1990 for BMW’s proposed entry into Formula 1. The design was revived and updated by Michel Costa, two chassis were built to be driven by Italians Alex Caffi and Enrico Bertaggia. While new S291 was still in preparation, Andrea Moda entered two old Coloni C4B (under the name Andrea Moda C4B)  for the season opening rounds in South Africa and Mexico.  But the team was excluded from the South African Grand Prix for not having paid the $100,000 deposit for new teams in the World Championship. Team arrived in Mexico, but the cars were not ready and neither ran. The Judd-powered S291 was finally ready for the 3rd round, the Brazilian Grand Prix. Caffi and Bertaggia were dropped for criticising the team’s preparation and replaced by Brazilian Roberto Moreno and British Perry McCarthy. In Brazil Moreno was unable to pre-qualify, while McCarthy was refused  a Super Licence and did not run. Perry finally received his Super Licence for the following round in Spain, but his car broke after a short distance down the pitlane. For the rest of the season both Moreno and McCarthy were eliminated in pre-qualifying, except Monaco Grand Prix where Moreno got through both pre-qualifying and then qualifying to start the Monaco Grand Prix from 26th on the grid, but his engine failed  after 11 laps. During the Belgian GP weekend Sassetti was arrested in the paddock for allegedly forging auto part invoices and the FIA World Motor Sport Council expelled Andrea Moda Formula for the remainder of the 1992 season. This decision was the end of a short career of Andrea Moda in F1. The model is conversion of Spark model from Moreno’s  to McCarthy’s car made by F1 Diecast Conversions.
