The Lotus 91 was a Ford-Cosworth powered ground effect car designed by Colin Chapman, Martin Ogilvie and Tony Rudd. After ambitious experiments with banned twin-chassis Lotus 88 Chapman returned to conventional design and built the reliable and light car in carbon fibre and kevlar, making it after the McLaren MP4/1 the second F1 car to race to be built from the material. The car driven by Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell performed quite well, especially on fast tracks like Hockenheim, Monza and the Österreichring. The race in Austria provided a spectacular last lap battle between de Angelis and Keke Rosberg in the Williams and brought the only season’s win to Elio and the team.
