The VJM02, the second Force India F1 car, was initially developed by Mike Gascoyne, but he and team principal Colin Kolles were released from their contracts in late 2008, after a conflict with team owner Vijay Mallya. The team decided to switch from Ferrari to Mercedes Benz engine quite late, and the car was significantly re-designed by Mark Smith, Ian Hall, and Simon Phillips. The VJM02 was driven by the same drivers as in 2008 – Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil. The team needed 12 races to earn the first points. In Belgium, Fisichella took pole position and finished in second place, bringing the Indian team the first podium. However, immediately after that Fisicho left for Ferrari to replace the injured Felipe Massa The second driver of the team, Adrian Sutil, was able to break into points only once, finishing 4th at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
