The 1989 Ferrari single-seater was first known as the 640 after its design number, and finally debuted as the F1-89 in the 1989 season. The car was designed by John Barnard, and it was the first Ferrari he was responsible for designing. It sported a sharp nose, with a narrow monocoque and bulging side-pods designed to house the radiators with maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The power was provided by Tipo 035/5 V12 engine developing 660 hp at 14500 rpm. At its wheel was a new driver, Nigel Mansell joined Gerhard Berger. Mansell won his debut race for Ferrari at Interlagos ant than took the victory at Hungaroring. The Scuderia third win came from Berger at Estoril. Despite its potential and speed, the car was unreliable and many technical retirements outweighed the successes.
