The 1990 CART PPG Indy Car World Series season was the 12th national championship season of American open wheel racing sanctioned by CART.  One of the leading teams of the Series, Newman/Haas, entered two Lola T90/00 cars powered by Chevrolet V8 turbocharged engine for Michael and Mario Andretti. Newman/Haas Racing formed as a partnership between actor, automotive enthusiast and semi-professional racer Paul Newman and long-time auto racing owner/driver Carl Haas, competed in the CART series since 1983. For the first years the team was a single-car outfit with championship veteran Mario Andretti. In 1989 Newman/Haas expanded to a two-car team, adding Michael Andretti. The father and son duo of Mario and Michael Andretti excelled as one of the top teams on the Indy car circuit over the next few years. In the 1990 season Michael won 5 races and took the second position in the final driver standing. His father was 7th with two second-place finishes at Portland and Mid-Ohio as his best result of the year.
