Penske PC19 was designed by Nigel Bennett and was powered by Ilmor-Chevrolet V8 90° turbocharged engine. The car was used by Team Penske in the 1990 season and was driven by Emerson Fittipaldi, 1989 CART champion, Rick Mears, and Danny Sullivan. Mears and Sullivan were long-time Penske drivers. Mears was with the team since the 1978 season, and Sullivan joined him in 1985. Fittipaldi, by contrast, only joined the team that season, winning the title in 1989 with Patrick Racing. 1990 was Mears’ last in the Pennzoil paint scheme as Marlboro took over as sponsor of the team. In his 16th season in IndyCar racing and 13th season with Penske, Mears was among top-level drivers. He won the inaugural race of the season at Phoenix, and took 3rd place in the championship behind Al Unser Jr. and Michael Andretti, but ahead of both his teammates.
