The Austrian Steyr Company entered 4.5-Liter cars in 1924 Targa Florio for Ferdinando Minoia, Gastone Brilli-Peri and Hermann Ruetzler. Ruetzler, aged 40 in 1924, was an Austrian photographer and racing driver, and raced mainly in hill climbs. Since 1920 he was works driver for Österreichische Waffenfabriks AG, which became Steyr-Werke AG in 1923. In the 1924 Targa Florio Ruetzler had a serious practice accident two days before the race. He crashed with a postage bus and bent the rear axle. In the collision his face hit the steering wheel and broke one of its spokes. Nose and eyes injuries prevented him from further practice but the car could be repaired for the race. Ruetzler finished 7th, best of Steyr drivers.
