The 312T3 continued the evolution of the T series with an engine with 12 horizontally opposed cylinders, that had been used since 1970, albeit tuned to give around 515 bhp. The chassis was completely new, with a new monocoque structure and a different suspension arrangement, designed to work with the Michelin tyres. The bodywork visibly was very different, with a flatter top to the body, allowing improved air flow to the rear wing. The 312T3 was introduced at the third race of the 1978 season. Argentinian Carlos Reutemann won four races (including one win in 312T2 in Brazil) and was ranked third in the final drivers’ standings. Gilles Villeneuve won for the first time at the final race, his home Grand Prix in Canada, but was only 9th in the championship.
