Grand Prix History in Scale Models

1965, Fabbri Ferrari F1 Collection, Ferrari, IXO, John Surtees

1965 Ferrari 512 Surtees

In the 1964 and 1965 F1 seasons Ferrari used two models – 158, powered by V8 engine, and 512F1, powered by flat-12. The 512F1, or 1512, used the same chassis as the 158. The flat-12 engine designed by Mauro Forghieri, developed 220 PS at  12,000 rpm compared to the 210 PS at 11,000 rpm of the 158’s V8 engine. The 512F1 appeared in last two rounds of the 1964 season, and was used in the 1965 alongside the 158.  The 1512, with its larger, more powerful engine, was designed to be competitive on the longest, fastest circuits of the Formula One season, such as Reims, Spa, and Monza. In this role it complemented the lighter, nimbler V8-powered 158 which was more competitive on small, twisty circuits. 1965 was difficult year for Ferrari. John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini managed to score only 4 podiums during the entire season. Surtees spent the first half of the season in 158, finishing 2nd in South Africa and 3rd in France, then switched to 512F1wity the best finish as 3rd at Silverstone. Bandini on the contrary started the season with 1512 I which he was 2nd in Monaco, and then drove 158. Surtees was withdrawn from two last rounds of the season and took the 5th position in the final drivers’ standings. Bandini was 6th.
