Chip Ganassi Racing Team was founded in 1990 by businessman and former race driver Chip Ganassi, from the assets of Patrick Racing to compete in the CART IndyCar World Series. Ganassi signed former Formula One driver Eddie Cheever and raced full-time in the IndyCar World series with Target as the primary sponsor. Cheever in his first CART season after his move from F1 scored two 3rd place podiums (at street circuits in Detroit and Toronto), and finished 10th in the Championship. In his first attempt at the Indianapolis 500, he finished eighth and was named the race’s Rookie of the Year, as well as CART’s Rookie of the Year.
