The 102B was the heavily updated version of the 102 model from 1990. Lamborghini V12 engine was replaced by Judd V8, and future world champion Mika Häkkinen and Julian Bailey filled the seats vacated by Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly. The car was heavy and ultimately unreliable, only three points were scored, all collected at San Marino Grand Prix where Hakkinen was fifth and Bailey sixth. Test driver Johnny Herbert replaced Baily after Monaco Grand Prix for the remainder of the season. Due to Herbert’s International Formula 3000 commitments the German driver Michael Bartels raced in his absence but failed to qualify in all five rounds he was entered. It was his only season in Formula One. Later Bartles competed in various touring car series including DTM and International Touring Car Championship. In 2010 Bartels won the Complete GT1 World Championship driving Maserati MC12.
