The MP4/9 was designed by Neil Oatley and used by the McLaren team in the 1994 Formula One World Championship. The car was powered by Peugeot A4 V10 engine which produced around 700 bhp. Piloted by Mika Hakkinen and Martin Brudle (and by test driver Philippe Alliot replacing Hakkinen at Hungary), MP4/9 proved to be very unreliable due to frequent engine failures. McLaren drivers retired 14 times in 20 starts in first ten rounds of the season. The team more or less solved the problems in the final part of the championship, and finished the season fourth with 42 points. Hakkinen scored six podiums and was 4th in the drivers’ standings, and Brundle was 7th with 2nd place finish at Monaco and 3rd at Adelaide.
