In 1996 the premier level open wheel racing in US split into two series. Newly formed Indy Racing League separated from CART championship with several teams, drivers and, most importantly, Indianapolis 500 event. Despite the loss of the most prestigious race, CART remained a much stronger series. For young (26 y.o.) Brian Herta the 1996 season was his third year in CART. Herta was signed by one of the top teams, Team Rahal, for the 1996 season and gradually improved his performance becoming one of the leaders of the series by the end of the season. At his favorite Laguna Seca Raceway Herta led the race until the last lap, when Alex Zanardi made the spectacular pass through the “Corkscrew” chicane and took the victory. Herta finally won two events at Laguna Seca road course in 1998 and 1999. In 1996 he finished the season 8th with 86 points. The scale model of his Schell-sponsored car was produced by the promotional company EPI Sports Collectibles.
