Former USAC racer Parnelli Jones and his business partner Velko “Vel” Miletich set up Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing in 1969. Parnelli team was initially solely concerned with USAC racing, then Formula A (F5000). Parnelli secured the services of ex Team Lotus designer Maurice Philippe and driver Mario Andretti for USAC racing in the early 1970s and in 1974 decided to move into Formula One racing, with financial support from tire manufacturer Firestone. The VPJ4 car was designed by Philipp based on Lotus 72 concept, with overall wedge shape, hip radiators, inboard brakes, and typical Cosworth / Hewland engine / gearbox combination. Team debuted in last two rounds of the 1974, and continued in 1975 full season. Mario Andretti started in 12 championship races, led at the Spanish Grand Prix before retiring and finished fourth in Sweden and fifth in France.
