Chip Ganassi Racing won 1996 and 1997 CART titles with Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi, respectively, and was the title defending team in the 1998 CART season. Vasser and Zanardi were teamed up for the third season, and were two major favorites of the season. 1998 saw Zanardi even more dominant in his red Ganassi Reynard-Honda, winning 7 of 19 races with an incredible 15 podiums in those 19 races. He won four races in a row in June and July en route to his second consecutive CART title. Vasser scored three wins and five podiums and finished the championship second with huge gap behind Zanardi.
