The McLaren car for 2021, MCL35M, was an upgraded version of the 2020 car, the McLaren MCL35. The car was driven by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. Norris scored four podiums and was close to his maiden win in the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi when rain in the closing laps ruined his strategy. Ricciardo in general was less impressive, but he won Italian Grand Prix, the team 1-2 race. It was his first victory for McLaren and the team’s first win since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix and their first 1-2 finish since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix. For the Monaco Grand Prix McLaren used a one-off Gulf livery (a light blue livery with an orange stripe, featured by many Gulf Oil-sponsored teams), inspired by Ford GT40 Le Mans winning cars of the 1960s.
