The PC-18 was constructed by Penske Racing for the 1989 Indycar season. The car was raced by two teams, Penske Racing and Patrick Racing. Rick Mears and Danny Sullivan drove for Penske Racing, and Emerson Fittipaldi was in his fifth season with Patrick Racing. In 1989 Fittipaldi had five wins, finished in the top five in every race he completed, and was the CART champion. Among his wins was a dominant performance in the 1989 Indianapolis 500 where he led 158 of 200 laps and won by two laps, but only after a dramatic duel with Al Unser Jr. in the closing laps of the race.
