Before the 2003 season Michael Andretti bought into the “Team Green” squad run by brothers Kim and Barry Green in CART. It became Andretti Green Racing and for 2003, the team moved to the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series from the CART championship. Andretti entered in the first four IRL events in 2003, finishing 6th in Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and 4th in Inaugural Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi. His season culminated with the 2003 Indianapolis 500, after which he retired from full-time IndyCar racing. Andretti led the race for 28 of the opening 94 laps before a throttle linkage failure put him out of contention.
