In 2021 Tony Kanaan returned to Chip Ganassi Racing on a partial schedule, driving the No. 48 Dallara Honda on oval courses. Seven-time NASCAR series champion Jimmie Johnson shared the No. 48, driving it on the road and street courses. Kanaan scored two top-ten results (10th at Texas and 9th at Gateway) and finished in 24th position in the championship.
