The year marked the first time that BMW had competed as a full team; previously it had only supplied engines. The F1.06 was designed by Willy Rampf, Jacky Eeckelaert and Seamus Mullarkey (chassis) with the powertrain being designed by Heinz Paschen. The car was driven by Nick Heidfeld, who joined from Williams, and Jacques Villeneuve, who had spent one season with Sauber before it was bought by BMW. However, Villeneuve was replaced by third driver, Pole Robert Kubica, before the season finished. Polish driver debuted in F1 in the Hungarian GP, where he originally finished seventh, but was disqualified after the race, as his car was 2 kg underweight at the end of the race due to excessive tyre wear. Later Kubica won his first points and podium, finishing 3rd at Monza.
