Arrows A8 designed by Dave Wass was used by the Arrows team during 1985 and 1986 Formula One seasons. The car had aluminium and carbon-composite chassis and the BMW M12 turbocharged engine. The chassis – engine mésalliance did not allow to exploit the immense power of the BMW M12 engine and general performance of A8 was not very remarkable. Young Austrian driver Gerhard Berger was recruited by the team to fill the second seat alongside Thierry Boutsen. Although Berger demonstrated good potential in some races, he finished the season in 20th place having scored 3 points in the last two races of the year in South Africa and Australia.
