The Tyrrell 019 designed by Harvey Postlethwaite and Jean-Claude Migeot, was the development of 018 model from the previous season. The major improvements were in the field of the aerodynamic efficiency of the chassis. The main aim of Harvey’s team to improve the underbody airflow was achieved by innovative high nose cone, which quickly became the norm in Formula One design. Talented Jean Alesi who made his debut in F1 in Tyrrell in 1989, continued to race for the team for the second year. Tyrrell used old 018 chassis in first two races of the 1990, and switched to 019 when the circus returned to Europe after season opening voyage to United States and Brazil. The season started very promisingly when Alesi finished 2nd at season opener, the USA Grand Prix in Phoenix. At first Frenchman continued to be very competitive switching to 019 with 6th place at San Marino and 2nd place at Monaco, but the remainder of the season resulted in only two points finishes.
