The 2004 season was fourth for Minardi under Paul Stoddard’s ownership. In 2003 Minardi purchased all A23 chassis and the intellectual property rights from Arrows Grand Prix International as British formula 1 constructor disappeared. The A23 was renamed as Minardi PS04 and in back-to-back tests it was found faster than PS03. However Minardi was worried about the negative PR from running a ex-Arrows and the team decided to modify the PS03 using Arrows intellectual property and elements from the Arrows A23 for the 2004 season. The resulting car was called the Minardi PS04B. Initial design of A23 was by Mike Coughlan and Sergio Rinland, and the modification of PS03 into PS04B was performed by Minardi chief designer Gabriele Tedozzi. Minardi drivers lineup was Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner, who had moved from Jordan, and the rookie Gianmaria Bruni. Baumgartner managed to score a single point (first for Minardi in two years) after finishing 8th, albeit last, in the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis Speedway.
