The FW19 was the further development of the 1996 winning FW18. After retirement of Damon Hill, the 1996 Champion, his teammate Jacques Villeneuve automatically became the number 1 in Williams and the main contender for 1997’ title. Heinz-Harald Frentzen joined the team from Sauber to replace Hill. Before the final Championship round, European Grand Prix at Jerez, Villeneuve won 7 races but in the Drivers’ standings still was behind Michael Schumacher on Ferrari with 5 wins. The championship was decided under highly controversial circumstances as championship leader Michael Schumacher deliberately rammed Villeneuve whilst trying to defend his race lead. Schumacher came to a halt in the gravel trap while Villeneuve continued and finished 3rd which was enough to secure his title. Schumacher was later excluded from the results of the Drivers’ Championship due to dangerous driving in the European Grand Prix.
