In 1964 Ferrari finally abandoned its long-lived V6 156 model designed by Carlo Chitti in 1961. New chief designer Mauro Forghieri, appointed at only 27 years of age when Chitti left for ATS, designed the V8-powered Ferrari 158, the first Ferrari Formula One car to use a monocoque chassis. John Surtees drove the Ferrari 158 to win his only Formula One Drivers’ World Championship in 1964. Former 6-times Motorcycle Racing World Champion, won German and Italian Grand Prix in 1964 and finished the Championship just 1 point ahead of Graham Hill from BRM.
