





For the 1969 season, Rindt signed for the 1968 World Constructors’ Champion Lotus, where he joined the defending Drivers’ Champion Graham Hill. At his debut race for the new team, the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami circuit, Rindt drove the 49B fitted with high front and rear wings. Austrian qualified 2nd after his team-mate Hill, but retired on lap 44 due to fuel pump failure.
