The R24 was designed by Mike Gascoyne, Bob Bell, Tim Densham and Dino Toso with Pat Symonds overseeing the design and production of the car as Executive Director of Engineering and Bernard Dudot leading the engine design. The car, driven by Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli, had taller engine cover, and the rear wing than previous model, which is limited to two upper elements in order to meet the 2004 regulations. The centre of gravity was now a little higher than before, but only by a mere 10mm. The new RS24 72° V10 engine produces more peak power and torque than its predecessor, and was much more reliable thanks to new rules concerning engine changes. The R24 proved to be very competitive managing to outpace all the rivals except Ferrari and BAR. Actually, Renault had the real chance to won the second place in the Constructors’ Championship until the last round. Fernando Alonso finished the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in third position and took three more podium finishes that year. The Spaniard achieved no race victories, but was fourth in the World Drivers’ Championship with 59 points. His teammate Jarno Trulli celebrated his first (and only) win in the Monaco Grand Prix, but was replaced by 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve after Italian Grand prix, despite leading his teammate in the championship at that point.
