The C39 is the second F1 car developed by Alfa Romeo Racing after rebranding of Sauber F1 Team. The chassis was designed by Jan Monchaux, Luca Furbatto, Ian Wright, Alessandro Cinelli and Nicolas Hennel, with the customer powertrain from Ferrari. Despite all pre-season rumors speculating on Antonio Giovinazzi replacement and possible retirement of Kimi Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo retained the roster for the 2020. The season turned out to be a step back for the team – Alfa Romeo was consistently hampered by a lack of power from its Ferrari engine. Despite slight improvement during the season, Giovinazzi and Raikkonen had collected only 4 points each.
