Swiss Mark Surer was considered one of the most talented drivers of his generation. In 1978, he finished second in the Formula 2 Championship, eventually winning the series the following year in a works March-BMW. He debuted in Formula 1 in the 1979  Italian Grand Prix filling the Ensign’s driver seat  for the rest of the season.  Surer did not qualify at Monza and Montreal, finally made it to the start in the US Grand Prix, but retired due to engine trouble. For the two last Championship rounds in North America Ensign signed the sponsorship deal with Rainbow Jeans and changed the livery from red to black and rainbow colors.
