After series on non-qualifying Derek Daly left Ensign Team after Monaco Grand Prix to join Tyrrell later that season. Ensign boss Mo Nunn hired 26-years old Patrick Gaillard. The Frenchman was 3rd in the European Formula 3 Championship in 1978 and started the 1979 season in European F2 Championship  for Chevron. Gaillard struggled on occasions, failing to qualify three times out of five, before being dropped in favour of Marc Surer. Gaillard was classified only once, in the British Grand Prix where he was 13th. In 1980 Gaillard returned to Ensign for the Spanish Grand Prix. Thereafter he drove in Formula 2, CanAm, and sports cars including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
