The Sauber C31 was designed by Matt Morris, powered by Ferrari 056 engine and driven by Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez. The car proved to be quite competitive. Actually the C31 was the best Sauber car in the era of team independent return with Ferrari engines in 2010–2017.  Sauber finished the 2012 season in a very respectable sixth place with 126 points, two fastest laps (China and Monaco) and four podiums (Malaysia, Canada, Italy and Japan). Japanese Kamui Kobayashi, who drove for Sauber for fourth season, scored 60 points and one podium (3rd place at his home Japanese Grand Prix), while Perez was 2nd in Malaysia and Italy and 3rd in Canada and collected 66 points.
