2012 Williams FW34 Maldonado

Following 2011 season, the worst season in their thirty-year history, Williams team underwent significant administrative and staff changes.  Patrick Head moved from the Williams F1 team to Williams Hybrid Power Limited, former McLaren designer Mike Coughlan was employed as Chief Designer, and Jason Somerville  was promoted to Head of Aerodynamics. Williams also reunited with engine-supplier Renault instead of Cosworth. Pastor Maldonado from Venezuela and Bruno Senna, Ayrton’s nephew, drove the FW34 and usually were midfield runners. The bright exception was the Spanish Grand Prix held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Maldonado qualified second, next to Lewis Hamilton on the front row of the grid, but was later promoted to his first pole position in his Formula One career after Hamilton was excluded from the results of qualifying, due to having insufficient fuel in his car. Pastor was able to hold off Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen to win, and converted his first pole to victory. As well as being Maldonado’s maiden Formula One win, it was also the first for Williams since the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix, which was won by Juan Pablo Montoya in the FW26, and still currently the last. As to Senna, his best of the season was 6th place in Malaysia. He scored the first fastest lap of his career at the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix. Maldonado finished the season 15th in the Championship on 31 points, Senna was 16th in with 31 points.
