The MP4-31 is the final McLaren to use the “MP4” prefix following CEO Ron Dennis’s departure from the team. Designed under the lead of technical director Tim Goss, chief designer Phil Prew and aerodynamics director Peter Prodromou, the car used the Honda RA616H power unit and was driven by Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne had replaced Alonso at the Bahrain Grand Prix following the Spaniard’s accident at the Australian Grand Prix which deemed him unfit for the next event. After qualifying 12th ahead of Jenson Button, Vandoorne finished 10th and became the first reserve driver to score points on debut since Sebastian Vettel at the 2007 United States Grand Prix.
