The MP4-31 is the final McLaren to use the “MP4” prefix following CEO Ron Dennis’s departure from the team. Designed under the lead of technical director Tim Goss, chief designer Phil Prew and aerodynamics director Peter Prodromou, the car used the Honda RA616H power unit and was driven by Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. The 2009 World Champion Button best finish was eighth at Hockenheimring. He ended his full-time career with a suspension failure at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Jenson took 15th in the Drivers’ Championship with 21 points.
