Raced as Marussia in 2015, Manor undergone a complete re-loading in 2016 under the ownership of Stephen Fitzpatrick. The team was now rebranded itself as Manor Racing MRT, and the team colours were changed to orange, white and blue. The MRT05 was designed by John McQuilliam (Technical Director), Luca Furbatto (Chief Designer) and Tim Milne (Head of Aerodynamics). It was powered by Mercedes PU106C Hybrid unit. Manor hired two rookies to drive the car: reigning Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters champion Pascal Wehrlein and GP2 Series regular Rio Haryanto. The only point for Manor was scored by Wehrlein, who managed to finish 10th in the Austrian Grand Prix. As to Indonesian Haryanto, ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix he was demoted to reserve driver, another rookie, reigning GP3 Series champion Esteban Ocon, due to lack of sponsorship.
