Scott Sharp raced in IRL since the beginning of the series in 1996, when he was runner-up with equal points with first IRL champion Buzz Calkins. In 1998 – 2004 Sharp raced for Kelley Racing, a team founded by Fort Wayne, Indiana-based car dealer Tom Kelley. Kelley fielded a Delphi sponsored car for Scott Sharp during its entire existence from 1998 to 2004. In 2002 IRL season Sharp was 6th in the final standings with 332 points and a single win – at Nazareth Speedway.
