The R.S.17 (Renault Sport 2017) was the second car following the return of Renault Sport to Formula One. Designed according new technical regulations, it was completely new design, and a major step forward compared to the team’s 2016 car, which was essentially the same as the Lotus car from 2015. The car was initially driven by Nico Hülkenberg and Jolyon Palmer. Hülkenberg joined the team after Kevin Magnussen left the team at the end of the 2016 season, while Palmer was replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr. from the 2017 United States Grand Prix onwards. Palmer, 2014 Grand Prix 2 champion and the son of former F1 driver and major UK race circuit owner Jonathan Palmer, was at his second (and last) F1 season, and achieved the only finish in points at Singapore finishing 6th and gaining a career best finish. Palmer was completely outperformed by his team-mate Nico Hülkenberg, who scored 43 points and finished the drivers’ championship 10th.
