The STR12 was designed by Scideria Toro Rosso under direction of James Key, and was powered by Renault R.E.17 ICE engine rebadged as STR. It was initially driven by Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz, Jr., however both drivers were replaced by Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley towards the end of the season. Kvyat scored 5 points in 15 rounds he competed, and was 19th in the final drivers’ standings of the season. Sainz moved to Renault after Japanese Grand prix, but scored 50 points in 16 races with Toro Rosso and finished the season in respectable 9th position in the championship.
