The Williams FW40 was named after the team’s 40th year in Formula One, hence skipping the expected FW39 identification number. The car was driven by Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll, who made his Formula One début with the team. Massa was able to finish consistently in points, while Stroll earned his first F1 points only in round 7, by finishing in ninth at his home Canadian Grand Prix. At the next race Stroll earned his first podium by finishing third in the chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix. By doing so, Stroll, aged 18, became the second youngest driver to be on the podium, and the youngest driver on the podium in his debut season. Stroll ended the season twelfth in the Drivers’ Championship, scoring 40 of the team’s 83 points.
