





The second Indy Racing League season consisted of the two races that followed the Indy 500 in the calendar year of 1996, and all eight events contested in the calendar year of 1997. Mike Groff competed for the Byrd-Cunningham Racing. He drove Reynard 95I in the two 1996 events, and new purpose-built IRL car G-Force in the remaining events in 1997. Groff was 1989 Indy Lights champion, and raced in CART from 1990 through 1996. He finished 3rd in the Las Vegas 500, the second round of the 1996-87 IRL season in his Reynard, and was 2nd in the 1997 Indy-200 at Walt Disney Speedway driving G-Force.
