The second Indy Racing League season consisted of the two races that followed the Indy 500 in the calendar year of 1996, and all eight events contested in the calendar year of 1997. All new purpose-built chassis from G-Force and Dallara with stock block naturally aspirated 4.0 liter V8’s from Oldsmobile and Infiniti were introduced in the 1997 rounds of the 96-97 IRL season. Colombian Roberto Guerrero continued to drive the No. 21 Pennzoil-sponsored car for Pagan Racing. In 1996 part of the season it was Reynard, and in the 1997 part the team switched to Dallara IR7-Nissan Infiniti. The Infiniti engine was usually slower than the competing Oldsmobile engine and Guerrero’s best race with the engine was the Phoenix 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, where he started 10th and finished 7th. Guerrero finished the season ranked 7th in points with 221 points.
