Scott Sharp competed in IRL since the first race in 1996, and was co-champion of the first IRL season. In 1998 – 2004 he raced for Kelley Racing, a team founded by Fort Wayne, Indiana-based car dealer Tom Kelley with car for Scott Sharp sponsored by automotive components company Delphi. Sharp was consistent top driver who won seven races and secured a run of six top-8 championship finishes in 1998-2003. In 2004 he was down in 13th in the championship with a best finish of 8th. Sharp decided to leave the team with his sponsorship after a poor 2004 season and moved to team founded by Mexican Indycar driver Adrian Fernandez, which was renamed as Delphi Fernandez Racing.
