Brazilian star Helio Castroneves drove in IndyCar since 2000, and 2017 was his 17th season with Penske Racing. Team Penske was represented by four cars driven by Simon Pagenaud , Josef Newgarden, Castroneves, and Will Power. Castroneves scored several podiums, a single win at Iowa Speedway, and entered the season’s final race, the Grand Prix of Sonoma, with some chances for title, 22 points behind championship leader and teammate Josef Newgarden and 19 behind Chip Ganassi driver Scott Dixon. A victory and Newgarden finishing third or lower and Dixon second or worse would give Castroneves the title. He finished in fifth place to be fourth overall with 598 points, behind Newgarden, Pagenaud and, Dixon. As usual in IndyCar racing, Castroneves’ car was painted in different liveries throughout the season. Penske car #3 used five color schemes. The main livery was black and white Hitachi, used in 9 races. This blue and white AAA Insurance was used in Long Beach, Birmingham and Texas. Rev Grour and Shell fuel liveries were used two times each (at Phoenix and Road America and at Indi 500 and Gateway, respectively). And at Indianapolis Grand Prix Helio’s car was painted in silver Verizon livery. After 2017 season Castroneves stepped down from IndyCar full-time to move to Penske’s IMSA SportsCar Championship program.
