The Lotus 21 was designed by Colin Chapman for the 1961 season. It was a mid-engined car with a tubular spaceframe structure skinned with fibreglass panels, of a more advanced build than seen in the Lotus 18. The car was powered by the 1.5-litre Coventry Climax FPF 4-cylinder engine. 1961 Team Lotus drivers were Jim Clark and Innes Ireland. Clark achieved 3rd place finishes at Zandvoort and Reims as his best of the season, and Ireland took the only Lotus victory in the 1961 F1 championship winning the last round, the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.
