Ryan Hunter-Reay began to compete in the Champ Car World Series in 2003 and won 2 races in his 3 seasons in the series. In 2007 he began to drive for Rahal Letterman Racing in the IndyCar series for the final six races of the season as a replacement for the released Jeff Simmons. He continued with Rahal Letterman Racing for the 2008, winning the race at Watkins Glen and finished out the season ranked 8th in points with 360 points.
