The F1 W12 was a further modification of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance which won the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships the previous season. The car was driven by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas and used a black livery inherited from the 2020. Mercedes again won the constructor’s championship, but Hamilton lost the drivers’ title to Max Verstappen in the last lap of the very controversial Abu Dhabu Grand Prix, the final round of the season. Hamilton not pitted under safety car when Nicholas Latifi crashed his Williams with 7 laps remaining. Red Bull used the opportunity to give Verstappen a fresh set of soft tyres, race director Michael Masi took the decision to allow only the five lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves before restarting the race with only one lap remaining. After the restart Verstappen quickly passed Hamilton and held him off for the remainder of the lap to win the race and the championship. At the Russian Grand Prix Hamilton achieved his 100th Grand Prix win – a fantastic record which definitely will stand for a long time.
