The Red Bull RB16B raced in the 2021 Formula 1 season was based on the RB16 used in 2020. The car was driven by Max Verstappen and Mexican Sergio Perez, who came from Racing Point team to replace Alex Albon. Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand prix and finished the season 4th. Verstappen took 10 victories, two more than his principal rival Lewis Hamilton, and won the Championship in final lap of the controversial final round in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton not pitted under safety car when Nicholas Latifi crashed his Williams with 7 laps remaining. Red Bull used the opportunity to give Verstappen a fresh set of soft tyres, Race director Michael Masi took the decision to allow only the five lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves before restarting the race with only one lap remaining. After the restart Verstappen quickly passed Hamilton and held him off for the remainder of the lap to win the race and the championship.
