





South African Team Gunston entered two Lotus 72E cars for locals Ian Scheckter and Paddy Driver at team’s home Grand Prix. For Ian, the elder brother of 1979 Formula One champion Jody Scheckter, it was his debut race in F1 World Championship. He qualified 22nd among 27 drivers and finished 13th, two laps behind the winner, Carlos Reutemann in Brabham. Paddy Driver, who competed in the Grand Prix motorcycle racing circuit from 1958 to 1965, had one F1 DNS in his records (1963 South African GP). In 1974 he qualified 26th and retired early in the race.
