Toleman TG183 designed by Rory Byrne in 1982 was distinctive due to twin rear wings and front wing mounted radiators. The updated version of the car, designated TG183B, was introduced in 1983 and raced in 1983 and in first four rounds of 1984 before new TG184 appeared. In 1984 Ayrton Senna made his debut in the Formula 1 championship in Toleman alongside former FIM 350cc and Formula 750 motorcycle World Champion Johnny Cecotto from Venezuela. Ayrton finished sixth in Brazilian and USA-West Grand Prix, and the 1984 San Marino Grand Prix saw the only time that Ayrton Senna would fail to qualify for a Grand Prix. The team switched to TG184 since French Grand Prix, and Senna scored three podiums and finished the season 9th with 13 points.
